Lesson Materials/Set-up: Flexible Groups, KWL chart, SEA worksheets for each group, Internet access for research,
Lesson Summary:
In their flexible groups, students will begin their research using a KWL chart of what they know about the history of Mountaintop and the Glen Summit development (from previous instruction on our local history unit). They will create at least five (5) specific questions they would like answered through analyzing pictures from the development of the Glen Summit development. Students can also utilize their previos interviews with senior citizens from the community to describe what Mountaintop was like in the early 1900s. Using the pre-approved websites from the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the History of Mountaintop, the students will choose two pictures that represent the time/era of the development of early Mountaintop. The students will utilize the SEA worksheet to analyze the pictures in their cooperative groups. The students will also utilize a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the pictures.
Upon completion of the research, analyzing the pictures, and combining their previous knowledge from the interviews with former residents, the students will add to their Power Point presentation (secondary source) with his/her group of the timeline of events using all information to demonstrate accuracy of the history of Mountaintop. The students will also demonstrate their ability to research effectively by completing the āLā portion of the KWL chart that answers their five questions they listed prior to the research. Student groups will present their research presentations to the class.
